The Lancet study has disclosed a rise in deaths due to air pollution in India, from 4.3 million in 2009 to 7.3 million over a decade, attributing 25% of all deaths between 2009-2019 to this cause. Particularly alarming PM 2.5 levels were reported in Ghaziabad and Delhi, reaching 24 times the WHO safe limit. Concurrently, the winter session of the Parliament has been marked by a lack of productivity, with political drama overshadowing critical issues such as pollution. In a separate event, a political controversy has surfaced in Karnataka over Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s proposal to construct houses in landslide-affected Wayanad district in Kerala. The BJP has challenged this move, raising questions about the allocation of resources considering Karnataka’s own infrastructural needs and financial limitations, thus sparking a debate on state priorities and fiscal management.
