A deadly stampede at a political rally for actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has resulted in 41 fatalities. The incident has triggered a political blame game, with the TVK alleging a manufactured conspiracy by the ruling DMK government, a claim the state denies. The TVK has petitioned the Madras High Court, requesting a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the tragedy. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Karur, where she met with victims’ families and announced a central government ex-gratia payment of two lakh rupees for the deceased.
