Teams from the National Commission for Women and National Human Rights Commission visited riot-affected areas in Murshidabad, West Bengal. Governor C.V. Ananda Bose also visited despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s objections. Over 300 arrests have been made in connection with the violence. The Governor stated that violence and corruption are significant issues in Bengal.
In other news, Bangladesh has demanded that Pakistan apologize for atrocities committed during the 1971 Liberation War and pay $4.5 billion in pending financial claims. This demand coincides with the upcoming visit of Pakistan’s foreign minister to Bangladesh in late April, the first such visit since 2012. The demand underscores historical tensions between the two countries due to Pakistan’s actions in then-East Pakistan, including the massacre of 3 million people and the rape of hundreds of thousands of women by Pakistani forces.
