A stunning 520-million-year-old fossil discovered in China has revealed a tiny but remarkably preserved brain and nerve system, offering scientists an unprecedented look into the early evolution of arthropods. Using advanced 3D imaging, researchers visualised the miniature brain regions, digestive glands and even traces of nerves from a larval creature linked to modern insects, crabs and spiders. The find, named Youti yuanshi, is so well preserved that experts describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime discovery. Its fragile structure and intact organs challenge what scientists believed possible for fossils this old. This rare specimen opens a new window into life half a billion years ago.
