The 1995 Srebrenica genocide remains one of the most horrific and controversial events in recent history. Thousands of people from Bosnia and abroad gathered in Srebrenica on Thursday for the annual ritual of commemorating the genocide, which Serb officials continue to deny, fueling ethnic tensions and deep divisions within the war-ravaged state.
The tragedy saw more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslims killed by the Bosnian Serb army and police, a massacre that continues to haunt the survivors and the families of the victims. This genocide is the only one acknowledged in Europe since the Holocaust, and its denial by Serb officials has perpetuated ethnic tensions and hampered reconciliation efforts.
