Senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar has been handed life imprisonment for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The 1984 riots saw the mass carnage of Sikhs in Delhi. With the life imprisonment sentence, Sajjan Kumar will have to spend the next 14 years in jail. Despite the allegations against Sajjan Kumar in 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Congress continued to back him at high positions of responsibility across last 4 decades.
Justice in the 1984 riots has been long awaited. Specific allegation against Sajjan Kumar was that he led a mob that set ablaze a father-son duo during the peak of the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. Coming on the back of Indira Gandhi’s assassination, the anti-Sikh riots were rationalised by Rahul Gandhi’s father and then PM Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi was infamously quoted to have said ‘When a big tree falls, the Earth shakes’.
In his interview to Arnab Goswami, prior to 2014 elections, Rahul Gandhi admitted the role of ‘some Congressmen’ in the context o9f 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Rahul Gandhi in his interview to Arnab said, ‘Some Congressmen were probably involved’ when pressed on the role of his party in the violence that ripped Delhi in 1984.
