In the blistering heat of the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Hanut Singh led the famed Poona Horse regiment through the mined hellscape of Basantar, obliterating over 50 Pakistani tanks in a single battle — a feat so terrifying that even the enemy dubbed his unit "Fakhr-e-Hind" (Pride of India). His unmatched strategic brilliance and spiritual discipline made him a warrior-saint — calm in spirit, ferocious in battle.
But just as his tanks were poised to surge deeper into Pakistani territory — potentially altering the subcontinental map forever — the Indian government ordered a halt. Politics intervened where history was being written in fire and steel. A chance to forever end the India–Pakistan standoff may have been lost.
Even after this, Hanut Singh was overlooked for the post of Army Chief — perhaps too fearless, too righteous, too unwilling to bend to bureaucracy. He retired into silent meditation, far from the spotlight he so deserved. When he passed in 2015, he died in samādhi, a yogic state of peace — like a saint who had once ridden into war.
